Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell

In Year 1, we have been reading a lovely story called ‘Dear Zoo’ by Rod Campbell.

A child writes to the zoo for a pet. The zoo send a series of unsuitable pets, revealed behind flaps in the form of crates and packing cases. These animals are all sent back for different reasons, except the very last one, which is perfect!

The children have thoroughly enjoyed reading about the animals that we can find at the zoo and the particular characteristics that each of them have. It has been amazing to see the children describing which animals they would, and would not, like to have and why. One child said they definitely would not want a snake because they are too scary, whilst another said they’d hate to have a camel because they might squash you.

The book has inspired us to write a non-chronological report about a lion or a giraffe, including lots of interesting facts and descriptive language. We have also been very excited to write a letter to the zoo asking for a new pet – the children are hoping to see an elephant or a penguin in the school when we get back in the New Year!
